Bella Farm’s Story
Bella Farm, LLC (est. 2009) was founded in Burlington, VT by Rachel Schattman and Kelli Brooks. The business was started as part of the Intervale Center’s Farms Program, an agricultural incubator that gives new farm businesses support in their early years. In 2012, Rachel moved the farm to Monkton, Vermont while Kelli decided to pursue other ventures.
The new home for Bella Farm was on the historic Rotax dairy farm, a former small dairy operation. Under Rachel’s direction and thanks to the hard work of a stellar farm crew, Bella Farm expanded to grow 4-acres of certified organic vegetable crops for local direct and wholesale markets.
In 2016, other adventures called. Rachel decided to focus the farm on one crop: garlic! Today, Rachel, her husband Patrick, and Hannah Aitken (a long-time employee of the farm) grow between 600 and 900-lbs of table and seed garlic annually. Most of their crop is sold through the Intervale Food Hub, a year round multi-farm CSA.
When they are not farming, Rachel, Patrick and Hannah pursue various endeavors. Rachel is a post-doctoral research fellow with the USDA Northeast Climate Hub, where she studies climate change and agriculture. Patrick is the Director of Red Clover Family Dentistry (Bristol VT). Hannah farms with Burnt Rock Farm (Huntington VT) and works in Antarctica in the off-season.
